In 2021, domestic aviation was the mode of transportation that emitted the most nitrogen oxides (NOx) per passenger-kilometer (pkm) in Germany with 1.15 grams per pkm. During that same year, the transport mode with the lowest NOx emissions per pkm was the long-distance bus with 0.04 grams per pkm.
The nitrogen oxides, namely nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), are gases that contribute to the formation of acid rain and smog, as well as affect tropospheric ozone.
