Physical stores were the most popular sales channel of ingredients, food products, and beverages as revealed in a survey conducted in November 2022. While almost 80 percent of respondents visited grocery stores for edibles and drinks, only close to a quarter bought consumables online. Even thought large-scale supermarkets have expanded their services online in recent years, the online supermarket equivalent of Aeon and Ito-Yokado were visited only by 5.5 percent of respondents for groceries.
