The residential sector was the most water intensive real estate sector in 2020 according to a survey among 88 listed real estate companies with a total market cap of 262 billion euros in Europe. A square meter of a residential building had a water consumption of 0.84 cubic meters per square meter per year, while for a self-storage building this figure was 0.04 cubic meters per square meter. The retail sector ranked second with an annual per square meter water consumption of 0.76 cubic meters.

The survey includes 88 companies with a market cap of 262 billion euros as of December 31, 2020, listed in the following countries: Germany, the UK, France, Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Austria, Norway, Romania, Ireland, and Italy
