In a survey conducted in Japan from December 2021 to January 2022, around 25.3 percent of male and 32.1 percent of female respondents were in favor of introducing a dual system that allows married couples to choose between sharing the same surname or keeping separate surnames. A higher share of men was in favor of maintaining the current system under which married couples have to share the same surname.
