According to a survey conducted in October 2021, only about five percent of respondents in Tokyo knew the term "Ally" and its meaning. In contrast to that, nearly 90 percent of participants were unfamiliar with the term.
The term "ally" or "straight ally" in relation to the LGBTQ+ community, describes a cisgender or heterosexual person, who recognizes the discrimination faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community and supports their social movement for acceptance and equal rights.
