In 2021, the vast majority of owner-occupied homes in the United Kingdom (UK) had energy efficiency rating D or C. The energy performance certificate is legally required when buying or renting a home and shows the energy efficiency of a property. Just about three percent of owner-occupied homes had an A or B rating, which is the most energy efficient. Social rented homes were more energy efficient, with about 2.6 million out of four million homes having C rating.
