The Sub-Saharan region is the region with the greatest potential to produce cost-efficient green hydrogen. According to a 2022 study, Sub-Sahara Africa could produce between 671 exajoules and 1,923 exajoules worth of green hydrogen at below 2 U.S. dollars per kilogram depending on future technological development and capacity buildup in the region. By comparison, Europe, which has a large number of green hydrogen plants could see up to 343 exajoules worth of annual production output in the optimistic scenario.
Economic potential for producing green hydrogen at below 2 U.S. dollars per kilogram worldwide by 2050, by region and scenario
(in exajoules per year)
The source gives the following information on methodology: "Assumptions for CAPEX 2050 are as follows: optimistic, PV: USD 225/kW to USD 455/kW; onshore wind: USD 700/kW to USD 1,070/kW; offshore wind: USD 1,275/kW to USD 1,745/kW. Pessimistic, PV: USD 271/kW to USD 551/kW; onshore wind: USD 775/kW to USD 1,191/kW; offshore wind: USD 1,317/kW to USD 1,799/kW. WACC: optimistic, per 2020 values without technology risks across regions. Pessimistic, per 2020 values with technology risks across regions. Technical potential has been calculated based on land availability considering several exclusion zones (protected areas, forests, permanent wetlands, croplands, urban areas, slope of 5% [PV] and 20% [onshore wind], population density and water stress). Total hydrogen demand, not including power sector (24 EJ/year), is equal to 50 EJ/year."
