The most common energy sources for commercial property in the United States in 2018 were electricity and natural gas. Approximately 5.6 million commercial buildings relied on electricity, with the office sector having the largest portion (approximately 970,000 buildings). Besides electricity, there were 549,000 office buildings that used natural gas and 102,000 office buildings that used fuel oil. The source also adds that more than one energy source can apply per building.
When considering the amount of floorspace using different energy sources, the warehouse and storage sector had the most square footage consuming electricity.

More than one energy source can apply per building. Data was withheld for some energy sources either because the Relative Standard Error (RSE) was greater than 50 percent or fewer than 20 buildings were sampled.
