The most common energy sources for commercial property in the United States in 2018 were electricity and natural gas. Approximately 95 billion square feet of commercial property relied on electricity, with the warehouse and storage sector having the largest floor area that used this energy source (approximately 16.3 billion square feet). Besides electricity, about 10 billion square feet of warehouse and storage space used natural gas and for 2.7 billion square feet of floorspace, propane was used as an energy source. The source also adds that more than one energy source can apply per building.
When considering the number of buildings using different energy sources, the office sector had the most buildings relying on electricity consumption.
