In 2022, the export value of wine from South Africa reached about 694 million U.S. dollars. This was an decrease compared to the previous year when the exports amounted to about 750 million U.S. dollars. During the reviewed period, the value of wine exports was highest in 2013 at nearly 872 million U.S. dollars.

The United Kingdom was the leading importer of South African wine, followed by Germany.   Wine tourism in South Africa has arisen as a lucrative area for special-interest tourism, which is an additional benefit to the country’s wine industry and economy. Although most wine tourists in 2022 were locals, the lesser number of foreign tourists were more likely to spend a sizable amount on wine per person. This provides an additional source of income for micro wine farms and especially assists them with staying afloat.
