Climbing accidents in Germany 2020, by sport
In 2020, a total of 78 climbing accidents were recorded in Germany. Alpine climbing resulted in the greatest number of accidents during this period. Alpine climbing takes place in alpine terrain. It's not so much about reaching a specific peak, but rather looking for the "line" of a ridge, pillar or through a large wall. Sport climbing shortly followed with 24 accidents associated with this climbing discipline. Sport climbing differs from Alpine climbing in that the protection is offered by pre-placed in-situ bolts to which the individuals personal equipment can be placed. Alpine climbing on the other hand usually requires traditional climbing equipment to be placed to which the rope is then attached. Artificial wall climbing, as the name suggests utilizes an artificial climbing wall and as many of the climbing walls across Germany were episodically closed throughout this period due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) containment measures, the number of accidents that were recorded during this period is likely to be considerably lower than that of a normal year.
