A survey conducted in United States in 2019 and 2020, asked respondents if they had a dental visit within the past 12 months. Among all the urbanicity groups, between 2019 and 2020 there was a decline in the percentage of adults who visited a dentist in the past year. Adults living in large fringe metropolitan areas were the ones most likely to report they had a dental visit in the past 12 months. This graph shows the percentage of U.S. adults with a dental visit in the past 12 months in 2019 and 2020, by urbanicity.
Percentage of U.S. adults 18 to 64 years who stated they have had a dental visit in the past 12 months from 2019 to 2020, by urbanicity*
* "Urbanicity: Urbanicity was categorized by collapsing the 2013 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Urban–Rural classification scheme for counties into four categories: large central metropolitan, large fringe metropolitan, medium and small metropolitan counties, and nonmetropolitan (counties in micropolitan statistical areas and nonmetropolitan counties)."
When referring to "Dental visit in the past 12 months: Estimates are based on responses to the question, “About how long has it been since you last had a dental examination or cleaning?” A response of “within the past year (anytime less than 12 months ago)” was considered as having had a dental visit in the past 12 months."
