As per a survey conducted in the academic year 2020/2021, Russian university students passed the Unified State Exam (USE) in the subject of the Russian language with 75.1 out of 100 points for males and 81 out of 100 points for females. The exam is compulsory for the admission to the university in Russia. When applying for a higher education program, a student must demonstrate results in particular subjects depending on the chosen field of study.

The survey was conducted throughout Russia, in nine districts: Far Eastern, Moscow, Volga, Northwestern, North Caucasian, Siberian, Ural, Central (excl. Moscow), and Southern. The share of respondents was as follows: Far Eastern - 5 percent; Moscow - 18 percent; Volga - 19 percent; Northwestern - 12 percent; North Caucasian - 5 percent; Siberian - 12 percent; Ural - 7 percent; Central (excl. Moscow) - 13 percent; and Southern - 9 percent.
97 percent of respondents studied in public universities and 3 percent of respondents - in private universities. 71 percent of respondents benefited from a free place and 29 percent were paying for their education. 68 percent of respondents were undergraduate students, with final-year students being slightly overrepresented.
