In a survey conducted in the academic year 2020/2021, 36 percent of students in Russia indicated that they chose a major that would help them get an interesting and diverse job. For over 30 percent, a decisive factor was that the major matched their skills, followed by 26 percent who named a high remuneration in the future.

The survey was conducted throughout Russia, in nine districts: Far Eastern, Moscow, Volga, Northwestern, North Caucasian, Siberian, Ural, Central (excl. Moscow), and Southern. The share of respondents was as follows: Far Eastern - 5 percent; Moscow - 18 percent; Volga - 19 percent; Northwestern - 12 percent; North Caucasian - 5 percent; Siberian - 12 percent; Ural - 7 percent; Central (excl. Moscow) - 13 percent; and Southern - 9 percent.
97 percent of respondents studied in public universities and 3 percent of respondents - in private universities. 71 percent of respondents benefited from a free place and 29 percent were paying for their education. 68 percent of respondents were undergraduate students, with final-year students being slightly overrepresented.
