Slightly over one quarter of total crimes registered in Russia in 2021 were committed using telecommunication technologies or were in the field of information security. The total number of such crimes exceeded 517 thousand in that year. The share of cyber crimes nationwide slightly increased from 2020. A significant increase from 15 percent to 25 percent of the total was recorded between 2019 and 2020, which could be explained by a surge in internet usage due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
