Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become one of the leading public health threats of the 21st century. Worldwide the rate of deaths directly attributable to AMR amounted to 16.4 deaths per 100,000 population in 2019, while the death rate for associated deaths was 64 per 100,000 population. Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest associated and attributable AMR death rates among all regions.
The graph shows the rate of deaths associated and attributable to AMR worldwide in 2019, by region.
Rate of deaths associated and attributable to bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide in 2019, by region*
(per 100,000 population)
* The number of deaths attributable to resistance is a sub-group of the ones associated.
"Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR)—which occurs
when changes in bacteria cause the drugs used to treat
infections to become less effective—has emerged as one
of the leading public health threats of the 21st century."
Deaths directly attributable to AMR are the ones for which the drug-resistant infection represents the main cause of death.
