Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become one of the leading public health threats of the 21st century. Worldwide deaths directly attributable to AMR amounted to 1.27 million in 2019, while associated deaths totaled 4.95 million (including directly attributable deaths). South Asia had the highest burden among all the regions.
The graph shows the number of deaths associated and attributable to AMR worldwide in 2019, by region.

* The number of deaths attributable to resistance is a sub-group of the ones associated.
"Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR)—which occurs
when changes in bacteria cause the drugs used to treat
infections to become less effective—has emerged as one
of the leading public health threats of the 21st century."
Deaths directly attributable to AMR are the ones for which the drug-resistant infection represents the main cause of death.
