According to a 2021 study, clean hydrogen use is projected to result in an annual carbon dioxide reduction of some 720 million metric tons by 2030. The sector with the greatest carbon dioxide abatement potential is the industrial sector such as steel manufacturing, at 400 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. By comparison, the heating sector is expected to be the smallest contributor to carbon dioxide abatement from clean hydrogen, with a potential of around 40 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
