The energy industry accounted for 33 percent of Germany's carbon dioxide emissions in 2022, making it the largest contributor of this gas. Industry and transportation followed, accounting for 24 and 17 percent, respectively. By comparison, agriculture was by far the largest source of both methane and nitrous oxide emissions in Germany in 2023. Enteric fermentation is the largest source of methane emissions, while agricultural soils release the most nitrous oxide.
