In 2021, the most common way U.S. new-vehicle dealerships acquired used vehicles for sales were trade-ins on new vehicles, which represented 39.2 percent of used vehicles for sale in new-vehicle dealerships. Furthermore, 27.1 percent of second-hand cars were exchanged with other used automobiles. In contrast, only eight percent of used vehicles were acquired through street trades .
