Brown coal use in Germany released 124 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO2) in 2021 - an increase of 17.6 percent compared with the previous year. The combined emissions of both hard coal and brown coal use have fallen by roughly 60 percent since 1990. Coal-related emissions are expected to fall even further in the coming years as Germany's coalition agreed to phase out coal by at least 2030. Coal-fired power plants, such as Neurath Power Station, are the biggest polluters in Germany.
