According to an online survey conducted in the United Kingdom in November 2021, when asked to think about a recently enjoyable time, 45 percent of children strongly agreed that they had recently had a great time being playful in a digital setting. Overall, 63 percent of children aged six to nine years reported having had a great time on both Fortnite and YouTube. Of those aged between 13 to 15 years, 57 percent agreed they had a great time on TikTok. Additionally, just a third of respondents said they had a great time on WhatsApp. By comparison, over seven in 10 children reported enjoying the time they spent in a non-digital context, with respondents aged 10 to 12 years enjoying non-digital context play more than any other age group.
