Volume of natural gas exports from Nigeria 2000-2023

In 2023, Nigeria's natural gas exports amounted to some 29.7 billion standard cubic meters, which represented a decrease compared to the previous year. The country is one of the largest exporters of natural gas in Africa. Overall, Nigeria had proven natural gas reserves reaching approximately 5.9 trillion standard cubic meters as of 2023. 

Nigeria’s liquefaction plants

The expected natural gas liquefaction plant capacity in Nigeria has remained stable over the last years, reaching close to 31 million tons per year. This referred to plants used for the transformation of gas into liquids, including those that are operational, announced, and under construction. The country is one of the leading African countries in gas plant capacity, along with Egypt and Algeria. Various plants in Nigeria account for this, most of which are operational.  

Emissions from natural gas

Nigeria is responsible for some of the highest carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas in Africa. Extractive activities accompanied by natural gas flaring result in the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In 2023, gas flaring in Nigeria produced carbon emissions of over 11 million metric tons, although this signified a decline in such emissions.
