In the 2019/2020 school year, around 506,000 pupils were attending pre-primary education in Algeria, approximately 10,000 more than in the previous school year. Pre-primary school corresponds to the nursery, which is known as the école préparatoire in Algeria. It precedes primary education and is attended by pupils aged approximately three to six years.

Pre-primary schools are intended as the Algerian écoles préparatoires. These should not be confused with the preparatory schools that precede the university education.
