Proposed sustainable air fuel (SAF) mandate for aviation in the EU-27 2025-2050

For the European Union to reach climate targets, emissions from the aviation sector will need to be reduced in the coming decades. As part of the European Commission's 'Fit for 55' package, new regulations propose to gradually replacing fossil jet fuels with sustainable air fuel (SAF) and synthetic fuels. By 2025, it is proposed that SAF will account for two percent of the aviation fuel mix. Five years later, this share would increase to 20 percent, of which synthetic aviation fuels would account for at least five percent. By 2050, it is proposed that SAF's share would have increased to 63 percent.

Currently, aviation accounts for roughly 13 percent of EU transportation sector greenhouse gas emissions. The Fit for 55 package aims to reduce EU greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
