As of January 7, 2021, the Democrats had won 48 seats in the United States Senate during the 2020 election. Independents, who typically caucus with the Democrats, won two seats. Parties need to earn 51 seats in the Senate in order to claim a majority. However, due to Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, Democrats have reached a majority in the Senate despite only having 50 seats, as she would break any ties in favor of the Democrats.
