In Spain in 2020, 56 percent of the consumers claiming to follow a flexitarian diet said they would like to see more plant-based meat and cheese in their supermarkets. On the other hand, three percent expressed curiosity about egg substitutes, and one percent declared being interested in more plant-based milk.
Plant-based seafood in Spain
The reason why only eight percent of flexitarians are demanding more plant-based seafood in their supermarkets could be that the quality of plant-based seafood hasn’t yet reached a level comparable to the Mediterranean country's seafood. Additionally, even amongst vegan consumers, seafood is still not as popular a choice as plant-based meat or other alternatives like tofu or tempeh.
What flexitarians really want
The numbers provided in this survey indicate that meat and cheese are the products that most flexitarian consumers would be willing to swap for their plant-based alternatives. However, flexitarians are yet to feel as satisfied with the quality and price of plant-based meat alternatives as vegans are. Regarding the variety of cheese, on the other hand, both consumer groups would be interested in a wider range of cheese alternatives from which to choose.
