When surveyed at the end of 2021, half of the French population supported the introduction of compulsory voting for elections, which would mean that abstention would be sanctioned by a fine. The region where this was most supported was Hauts-de-France, where three out of five people agreed with mandatory voting. Conversely, the regions where this idea had the least support were the overseas departments and territories.
The highest abstention rate in the 2022 presidential elections was in the overseas departments and territories.
