Global sea level increased at an average of 3.3 millimeters per year between 1993 and 2019. Thermal expansion (changes in water temperature and salinity) were estimated to have accounted for around 40 percent of sea level rise in the period. Meanwhile, mass increase from melting ice caps and glaciers contributed with a rise in 2.1 millimeters per year during the period.
