Around 17,903 terawatt hours of electricity worldwide were generated using fossil fuels in 2023. This was an increase compared to the previous year and the highest figure in the period of consideration. This was in spite of a decrease in the overall global fossil fuel share in power generation, which amounted to less than 61 percent in 2023.
