In order to limit global temperature increases to two degrees Celsius or below as proposed under the Paris Climate Agreement, the use of fossil fuels will have to be reduced significantly by the middle of this century. As a result, 80 percent of coal reserves worldwide would be deemed unusable. In addition to the fossil fuel resources themselves, the infrastructure that is used for the extraction and burning of fossil fuels will also become unusable.
