The Chinese mental healthcare sector expanded significantly in the past decade, with the number of beds in psychiatric wards in China surpassing 750,000 in 2021. However, the level of services and the number of beds vary considerably between regions. In the populous provinces of Sichuan, there were more than 83,000 beds in psychiatric wards, while western regions such as Qinghai and Tibet both had less than 1,000 beds in psychiatric units.
