Trade balance of agricultural products in Hungary 2020, by type

Hungary recorded a positive agricultural trade balance in 2020 in case of all product categories except for beverages. The trade balance of all agricultural goods totaled 3.2 billion euros during the same year, with agricultural commodities such as grains and livestock accounting for 2.2 billion euros.

Agricultural exports

In 2020, the value of agricultural goods exported from the country reached over 9.6 billion euros, with cereals, especially corn and wheat counting as Hungary’s most important agricultural export products. In the same year, the export value of wheat and meslin reached 544 million euros, while corn contributed with another 899 million euros. However, in March 2022, as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture banned the export of all grain products.

Agricultural imports

In 2020, agricultural imports to Hungary were valued at 6.4 billion euros. Food preparations and primary agricultural products other than commodities accounted for the biggest share of imports, measuring at 1.6 billion euros, respectively. During the same year, the import value of fruits and vegetables totaled 957 million euros and a furhter 775 million euros’ worth of meat and meat preparations were imported to the country.
