World Heritage sites in South Africa 2024, by type
As of 2024, South Africa was the country with the second-largest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Africa. The country housed 10 sites, of which five were in the cultural category. These included the Fossil Hominid Sites, the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, and the Robben Island, where former president Nelson Mandela was jailed. Moreover, the country listed four natural sites, such as the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
