The total agricultural output amounted to 11.39 billion euros in Hungary as of 2023, which represented an increase compared to the previous year. In 2022, cereals accounted for the biggest share of agricultural production, measuring at 28 percent, while animal husbandry contributed with a further 24 percent.
Cereal production
The production value of cereals amounted to 2.2 billion euros in 2022, marking a decrease compared to the year before. As of 2021,wheat and maize were the two main cereals produced in the country based on the harvested area, both grown on nearly one million hectares. These cereals also belonged to the country’s most important export products during the same year.
Agricultural employment
When it comes to employment in the agriculture industry, Hungary has a considerable number of seasonal workers and a high prevalence of undeclared work. In 2021, the number of registered employees in the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industry totaled 201 thousand compared to 222 thousand registered workers in 2017.

The Economic Accounts for Agriculture (EAA) provide detailed information on income in the agricultural sector. The purpose is to analyse the production process of the agricultural industry and the primary income generated by this production. The accounts are therefore based on the industry concept.
The sector covers the income of all units involved in agricultural production, even if some of those units have more important economic activities or if the purpose of some others is not commercial. Note, however, that kitchen gardens (producing for own-consumption only) are not included.
Division 01 of NACE Rev. 2 comprises:
•Group 01.1: Growing of non-perennial crops;
•Group 01.2: Growing of perennial crops;
•Group 01.3: Plant propagation;
•Group 01.4: Animal production;
•Group 01.5: Mixed farming;
•Group 01.6: Support activities to agriculture and post-harvest crop activities;
•Group 01.7: Hunting, trapping and related service activities.
