The first round of the presidential elections took place this Sunday, April 10, in France. Incumbent President Emmanuel Macron and the far-right candidate, Marine Le Pen came out on top, with 27.84 and 23.15 percent of the votes cast, respectively. France Insoumise candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon narrowly missed out on the runoff with almost 22 percent of the vote, making him the leading left-wing candidate. The candidates of the two traditional parties, Valérie Pécresse and Anne Hidalgo, experienced an unprecedented defeat, each obtaining less than five percent of the vote.
More than one in four French people did not go to the polls.
