Japan: risk management loans of city banks by category 2021

As of March 2021, the majority of loans under risk management held by city banks in Japan was made up by past due loans exclusive of accrued interest at around 1.36 trillion Japanese yen. This signals a new upwards trend after overdue loans had already decreased from approximately 2.6 trillion yen in 2013 to a decade low of approximately 1.1 trillion yen in 2018.

"City bank" generally refers to four Japanese banks that have their head offices in either Tokyo or Osaka with branches spread all across the country: MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Mizuho Bank, and Resona Bank. The former three so-called "megabanks" are considered systematically important financial institutions by the Financial Stability Board.
