Loans under risk management of city banks in Japan 2012-2021
As of March 2021, city banks in Japan held around 2.39 trillion Japanese yen in loans under risk management. This signals a new steep upwards trend after risky loans had already decreased from approximately 4.2 trillion yen in 2013 to a decade low of approximately 1.7 trillion yen in 2019.
"City bank" generally refers to four Japanese banks that have their head offices in either Tokyo or Osaka with branches spread all across the country: MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Mizuho Bank, and Resona Bank. The former three so-called "megabanks" are considered systematically important financial institutions by the Financial Stability Board.
