There were over 41 million micro-enterprises in Nigeria in 2017, which represented over 99 percent of the micro. small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the country. Small and medium-sized enterprises, on the other hand, reached approximately 71,300 and 1,800, respectively. According to the source, most of these companies were located in Lagos.

- The survey was conducted in all 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Both urban and rural enumeration areas (EAs) were covered.
- Micro Enterprises sample: 22,200 households, 600 households with enterprises interviewed per state, 15 households selected EA.
- Small & Medium Enterprises sample: 4,000 SMEs visited across all states, including FCT.
