The number of psychiatric hospitals nationwide surpassed 2,000 in 2021, reflecting a substantial expansion of the mental healthcare sector in China in recent years. Before 2011, there were fewer than 700 psychiatric hospitals in the country. The figure surpassed 1,000 in 2016 and grew even faster since then. In the past decade, more mental healthcare facilities were built in rural areas, improving the psychiatric services in China's vast countryside.
