Companies across the globe continued to prioritize the use of passwords as their top security measure in 2022. According to a recent survey, a significant number of participants, precisely 56 percent, stated that their company relied on security questions as a primary form of authentication. These findings indicate that password based security remains the most common method employed by businesses to safeguard their sensitive data and protect against potential cyber threats.
Growing popularity of push authentication
Push notification authentication is a secure way to confirm identity without passwords, one of the many alternative secure authentication methods that are available. Users receive a notification with all the necessary information and can approve or deny it with one clickâeasy and hassle-free authentication. This authentication method has seen a significant jump in acceptance, growing by 22 percentage points from 2021 to 2022.
The move to the passwordless
Using passwordless authentication is a safer option, with better security compared to traditional password-based authentication. This method involves digital certificates that use private and public key pairs. The public key is a padlock, while the private key unlocks it. However, many companies are facing barriers to implement passwordless authentication, most commonly because their applications were not designed to support it. Furthermore, a survey revealed that 20 percent of respondents needed more skills and expertise to adopt this approach.
