In 2022, over half of crime and thriller commissions in Western Europe's big five markets France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK came from local commissioners, down by nine percentage points in 2019. Global platforms, mainly SVODs, increased their share of productions in this genre during this time frame to 21 percent. Crime and thriller is one of the leading genre in Western Europe, making up about one third of all scripted TV shows and movies commissioned in 2022.
