A study estimated that among the large population with mental health conditions in China, almost 50 million were suffering from depressive disorders in 2019. This figure rose significantly in the past 30 years, from less than 35 million in 1990 to its current level. Major depressive disorder does increase the risk of suicide, hence posing a great challenge to the Chinese mental healthcare service.
