Over the past ten years, the number of student residence permits granted in Sweden peaked in 2016 following the high influx of refugees to Europe in 2015. It decreased since, dropping to 10,000 in 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19. It then increased again, counting over 20,000 permits. Other kinds of residence permits granted in Sweden were related to the labor market, the EEA agreement, family reunification, or the state of being a refugee.
