The most important Zero Trust principle is “Never trust, always verify”. In other words, a Zero Trust framework does not trust any user, device, or credentials, requiring each user to comply with a strict verification and authentication procedure before being allowed to access the company's network. In 2023, the global Zero Trust security market amounted to over 31.6 billion U.S. dollars and was forecast to increase to 133 billion U.S. dollars by 2032.
Identity Access Management (IAM)
The user’s identity lies at the core of a Zero Trust security strategy. Simply put, companies must be aware of the identity of every user prior to being granted access to the company’s network. In this regard, IAM is a framework of policies and technologies that ensures that the right users have access to the right data. In 2023, the global security spending on IAM was estimated at over 16 billion U.S. dollars. North American companies reported the highest IAM ownership, compared to Asia-Pacific and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The main tool integrated within companies’ IAM system was security information and event management (SIEM).
Micro-segmentation
Micro-segmentation is a method to logically create network segments and completely control traffic within and between the segments. Specifically, it controls workloads in data centers and multi-cloud environments while restricting the spread of lateral threats in the data centers. Companies’ most preferred method to enable Zero Trust segmentation in 2021 was Zero Trust Network Access. Despite the benefits of adopting micro-segmentation, companies worldwide still struggle with identifying and designing the most appropriate pilot.
