According to results from the National Health Survey completed in Australia during the 2021 financial year, 26.3 percent of respondents aged 18 to 24 years exceeded recommended alcohol consumption levels. The 75 and over age group reported the lowest proportion of excessive alcohol consumption at 20.6 percent.

The data should be considered a break in time series from previous National Health Surveys and be used only for point-in-time analysis.
Alcohol consumption risk levels were assessed against the Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol (the Guidelines), updated in 2020 from the National Health and Medical Research Council. According to the Guidelines, ‘to reduce the risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury, healthy men and women should drink no more than 10 standard drinks and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day'.
The financial year in Australia runs from July 1 to the June 30 the following year. For example, the 2021 financial year commenced on July 1, 2020 and ended on June 30, 2021.
