The interest that the French show in an electoral campaign, which is analyzed before each election, is a good indication of the turnout rate for the election, and helps to better understand and identify the phenomenon of abstention.
It appears from these figures that the 2017 presidential elections, as is generally the case, saw a significantly higher turnout than in other elections. It also appears that, regardless of the year or type of election, participation is always higher than the percentage of interest expressed: 9.3 points higher in the regional elections of 2021, and 11.1 points higher in the European elections of 2019.
