Prison occupancy levels in South American countries 2022

In 2022, Bolivia was the South American country with the highest prison occupancy level, at 269.9 percent of its official capacity. Peru followed, with 212.2 percent occupancy rate. Chile and Suriname were the only countries in the region whose occupancy level did not exceed the national prison system's capacity. In Central America, Guatemala had the highest occupancy rate.
