Production companies accounted for almost 32 billion Japanese yen of the export value of Japanese broadcasting contents in fiscal year 2021. This amounted to a share of 48.7 percent. Production companies were followed by Japan's public broadcaster NHK and commercial key stations.

Figures are based on an annual survey. The survey for fiscal year 2021 was conducted among 84 terrestrial broadcasting operators, 133 satellite broadcasting and cable television operators, as well as 26 production companies.
The category of broadcasting contents encompasses broadcasting rights, online streaming rights, video and DVD rights, program format and remake rights, merchandising rights, as well as other rights. Since fiscal year 2016, merchandising rights explicitly include video game rights. In cases where broadcasting rights are sold in tandem with other rights, the question regarding the classification was left unanswered, or the classification cannot be clearly made, those rights are counted as broadcasting rights.
