A January 2022 survey conducted in the United States found that 54 percent of female respondents and 50 percent of male respondents strongly supported social media companies requiring users to verify their identity before creating a profile. Overall, just three percent of women and five percent of men strongly opposed identity verification when opening a social media account.

Original question: "Do you support or oppose the following measures social media companies could take to help reduce catfishing on their platforms? Require users to verify their identities before creating a profile". The source defines catfishing as a situation "where users are tricked by fake accounts into online relationships and sometimes scammed out of money".
